Anime tattooing relies on precise, clean linework, subtle or block shading, and color that stays faithful to the source material; it also works well in blackwork. Visually, it is defined by sharp lines, high detail, expressive character work, and vivid colors or strong contrast.
Realism tattooing aims to reproduce real images with high fidelity, using precise shading, smooth gradients, strong contrast and, often, no defined outlines. It can be executed in black and grey or full colour.
Abstract tattooing uses non-figurative forms: lines, ink washes, brushstrokes, color blocks, geometric shapes, and gestural marks. Linework, within this category, prioritizes clean lines without heavy shading.
See full gallery →Microrealism is a subcategory of realism applied to very small tattoos. It uses fine needles, minimal or near-absent linework, soft shading and sometimes pointillism to build detail within a limited space.
Black & Grey is a style worked exclusively with black ink, diluted to build a greyscale range and soft shading. Its visual signature is the contrast between solid blacks, smooth gradients, volume and detail; white highlights are sometimes added to enhance light points.
Blackwork is a tattoo style that uses black ink as its only colour. The technique combines precise linework, solid black fills and, depending on the piece, hatching, dotwork or negative space to create contrast and volume.
Fine line tattooing uses very thin needles, typically one to three points, to create precise, delicate lines with minimal shading. Visually defined by clean outlines, low line weight, refined detail and minimal ink saturation.
Geometric tattooing is built on precise straight and curved lines, shapes such as triangles, circles, squares and symmetrical patterns, typically executed in black ink with fine linework. The mandala style combines radial symmetry, precise geometry and concentric patterns into cohesive, structured compositions.
Traditional Japanese tattooing uses bold outlines, dense fill, strong shading, and backgrounds featuring waves, clouds, wind, and water. It can be executed with a machine or with tebori, the hand-poke technique using wooden or metal rods.
Surrealist tattooing is typically executed in black and grey or colour, with detailed shading and frequent integration of realism techniques. It is defined by dreamlike compositions, distorted proportions, impossible perspectives, and the merging of figures, objects, animals and landscapes into a single piece.
